WASTE MANAGEMENT MONTH: Sector-specific solutions for healthcare, education and hospitality estates

Facilities managers working across complex estates know that a one-size-fits-all waste strategy won’t cut it. Sectors like healthcare, education, and hospitality face unique challenges when it comes to food and clinical waste, but also unique opportunities to lead the way in responsible waste handling.

In healthcare, the safe disposal of clinical waste is critical for infection control, compliance, and public trust. Innovations in this space include on-site sterilisation units, traceability systems for sharps and hazardous materials, and smart containers that notify staff when near capacity.

Facilities teams are also working to reduce the volume of clinical waste by improving segregation, ensuring recyclable or general waste items don’t end up in high-cost streams unnecessarily.

In education and hospitality, food waste is a growing concern, both ethically and environmentally. Schools, universities, and leisure facilities are trialling portion control tech, digital menus, and behaviour-change campaigns to reduce food waste at source.

Others are investing in on-site composters or anaerobic digesters to divert waste from landfill while generating bioenergy or compost for local use.

In both sectors, engagement is key. FM teams are collaborating with catering contractors, cleaning staff, and even students or patients to embed smarter waste habits. Whether through colour-coded bins, educational campaigns, or reward schemes, the goal is to shift from reactive waste handling to proactive waste prevention.

By investing in targeted solutions that address sector-specific needs, facilities managers can reduce costs, improve sustainability performance, and build environments that reflect modern environmental standards and social responsibility.
