Why trauma bleed kits matter in Facilities Management

Facilities managers are responsible for creating safe, compliant environments for employees, visitors and contractors, often across multiple, high footfall sites. Equipping sites with first aid kits and defibrillators is an essential part of on-site safety but severe trauma incidents can often be overlooked when it comes to emergency planning.

Traumatic bleeding or other potentially fatal incidents can occur as a result of:

  • Slips
  • Falls
  • Machinery accidents
  • Sharp objects
  • Vehicle incidents
  • Acts of violence

These incidents are not confined to high-risk industries. They can occur in offices, retail spaces, leisure facilities, transport hubs and public buildings and being able to act quickly is essential to prevent these incidents from becoming fatal.

Why is immediate action important in an emergency?

When a traumatic incident occurs, the first few minutes and the way responders act are critical as it can often take emergency services a while to arrive. When emergencies such as catastrophic bleeding occur, it’s usually bystanders who must intervene before medical help arrives.

In 2023, Latif et al. described a ‘chain of survival’ for traumatic haemorrhage to:

  • Recognise catastrophic bleedings
  • Apply rapid control (direct pressure, tourniquet, or haemostatic dressing)
  • Ensure timely transfer to definitive care

Public Access Trauma Kits (PAcT) or Bleed Control Kits, such as the ZOLL Mobilize compact kit, help to bridge the critical time window between the incident occurring and emergency services arriving to increase the chances of survival.

What is a traumatic bleed control kit?

Kits such as the ZOLL Mobilize Trauma kit are designed to help responders manage life threatening external bleeding caused by deep lacerations, stabbings or crush injuries.

They usually include:

  • Emergency tourniquet (for limb bleeding)
  • Haemostatic dressings (to promote clotting)
  • Chest seals (for penetrating chest injuries)
  • Trauma dressings and pressure bandages
  • Gloves, shears, foil blanket, marker pen and face shield
  • Clear user instructions

The ZOLL Mobilize Trauma Kit is designed to allow bystanders to act quickly and with confidence when every second counts. The Mobilize Rescue App is included and will walk responders through the process every step of the way so they know exactly what to do and when until emergency services arrive.
