Barnsley health hub highlights growing demand for compliant, multi-functional interiors

The redevelopment of Barnsley’s Alhambra Centre into a town centre health hub is underscoring the increasing complexity facing facilities and estates management teams as public buildings are repurposed for healthcare use.

Originally a retail space, the site is being transformed to support local health services and relieve pressure on Barnsley Hospital. For FM professionals, the project illustrates the challenge of balancing aesthetics, hygiene, acoustics and maintainability within a single environment.

A key requirement was meeting hospital-grade hygiene standards across all interior elements. Ceiling systems, in particular, had to comply with strict regulations while remaining durable and easy to maintain, critical in high-traffic, multi-use healthcare settings.

At the same time, acoustic performance was a major consideration. Waiting areas and treatment rooms require calm, low-noise environments to support patient wellbeing, placing added emphasis on sound absorption and space design.

The solution, delivered in collaboration with Zentia, involved a zoned approach tailored to different operational needs. Reception and waiting areas feature high-performance acoustic baffles designed to create a welcoming, visually engaging environment while managing noise levels. In contrast, clinical areas utilise specialist ceiling tiles that combine sound absorption with antimicrobial properties, supporting infection control requirements.

For estates teams, accessibility and long-term maintenance were also central to the specification. Ceiling systems in circulation areas were selected for ease of access to building services, enabling efficient maintenance of mechanical and electrical systems without disruption to operations.

The project also highlights the importance of early collaboration between architects, contractors and FM stakeholders. Detailed design support, system planning and on-site guidance helped ensure that performance requirements were met without compromising installation timelines or operational outcomes.

As more town centre assets are repurposed to meet evolving public service demands, FM leaders are increasingly required to deliver environments that are not only compliant and efficient, but also adaptable and user-focused.

The Alhambra Centre redevelopment demonstrates how integrated design and specification can support this shift, creating spaces that meet the technical demands of healthcare while maintaining flexibility for long-term estate management.
