What have been the biggest challenges the FM industry has faced over the past 12 months?

The last year’s been tough for FM. We’ve felt the squeeze with tighter budgets and the rising cost of wages and National Insurance. Finding the right people is always a challenge, especially in licensed security, where there’s always a shortage. The move to hybrid working has changed how we use offices, presenting new challenges for our teams. And while new technology offers great promise, getting it all to work seamlessly has its own complexities. Despite these hurdles, we’ve remained focused on hitting our sustainability goals and keeping pace with all the evolving regulations. It’s been a busy year!

And what have been the biggest opportunities?

2025 looks promising for the private security sector. We’re seeing real opportunities emerge in specialised roles, how we integrate technology, and crucially, in how we adapt to new threats. A new driver behind this growth is the new Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025. This legislation is set to affect areas like event management, executive protection, riot protection, and retail security, which is a significant step forward. Beyond that, there’s always a focus on talent development and fostering greater professionalism across the board. The importance of public trust and safety is rightly coming to the fore, which all contributes to pushing our industry standards higher. It’s a significant time to be part of these changes.

What is the biggest priority for the FM industry in 2025?

Looking ahead to 2025, our industry’s main priorities are clear. First, we need to focus on integrating sustainable practices into everything we do. This isn’t just a trend; it’s essential for our future and our customer’s. Alongside this, there’s a huge emphasis on digital innovation so that we as an industry can embrace new technologies to work smarter and deliver better outcomes. As workplaces keep evolving into hybrid models, adapting effectively to these changing environments will also be key. Finally, staying compliant with ever-changing legislation remains paramount. It’s a continuous challenge, but crucial for all of us leading in this sector.

What are the main trends you are expecting to see in the market in 2025?

For 2025, I expect to see a few key trends shaping the FM market. We’ll definitely see more influence from Artificial Intelligence (AI), hopefully helping us to work smarter. There’s also a clear and growing push towards sustainability and ESG goals which will increasingly drive our offerings and how we advise customers. Finally, the workplace experience and flexibility will remain a strong focus, with safety always being central to how we approach our customer estates. It’s all about creating environments that truly work for the people who are there.

What technology is going to have the biggest impact on the market this year?

There’s little doubt that AI will have the greatest impact on the facilities management market over the coming year. If we can bring AI into crucial FM processes, things like predictive maintenance, automation, and optimising workflows, then we should see improvements in both efficiency and how well our operations run. The evolution of AI into business is set to be a real gamechanger for us all.

In 2025 we’ll all be talking about…?

I expect our conversations in 2025 will frequently turn to two main areas. Firstly, the role of technology in society, especially with the sudden rise of AI. We’ll definitely be discussing how digital tools integrate into our daily and working lives, and the need for ethical considerations as AI becomes more widespread. Secondly, the impact of geopolitical events on the global economy will always stay a significant topic round the coffee table. The broader shifts always have some sort of a ripple effect, and we’ll need to keep a close eye on how they influence our industry and operations.

Which person in, or associated with, the FM industry would you most like to meet?

I genuinely enjoy meeting all my fellow professionals. Everyone has a story, and a willingness to share their experiences and knowledge. We truly gain so much from simply sitting down and chatting with our teams on the ground. That’s always my preference

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learnt about the FM sector?

No two days are ever the same, which certainly keeps things interesting and means we’re always thinking on our feet. It’s a continuous process of learning and adapting to ensure we deliver exactly what’s required.

You go to the bar at the Facilities Management Summit – what’s your tipple of choice?

Would always depend on the circumstances, environment and the company I’m with, but would keep it simple and opt for a nice cool larger.

What’s the most exciting thing about your job?

For me, it’s all about working alongside fantastic people to tackle whatever problems come up. We learn from every experience, every chance we get, and our ultimate goal is to take the hassle away from our customers. That way, they can really focus on what matters most: their main business goals.

And what’s the most challenging?

The FM world never sleeps, particularly within the security industry – and things don’t always go to plan. However, by remaining open to learning and consistently adapting to new situations, we can ensure our continuous development and growth as an industry. The trick, lies in maintaining composure even when faced with tough challenges. It’s about maintaining composure, assessing the situation, and consistently maintaining our resilience. That steady approach helps us navigate the complexities and keep things moving forward effectively.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

I firmly believe you should never expect others to do something you wouldn’t be prepared to do yourself. It’s a principle I’ve always lived by. Equally important is looking after yourself – your well-being – allows you to perform at your best. By always striving to be the best version of yourself, you’re far better placed to effectively help, guide, and support those around you. It creates a stronger, more capable team for everyone
